The Red Cross is seeking disaster spiritual care workers to assist the community following a disaster such as a home fire. These volunteers are a crucial part of our clients’ recovery process and may be called upon periodically throughout the year to assist based upon their availability. For those that choose, they can even help during a larger disaster like a hurricane or deploy out of state for 2 weeks to assist with disasters around the country.
Disaster Spiritual Care Volunteers:
Assists clients to draw upon their own spiritual resources -- values and faith -- in the midst of pain, regardless of faith tradition.
Provides age-appropriate and culturally sensitive Disaster Spiritual Care in times of distress. The Disaster Spiritual Care program is designed to support the care provided at a local level during traumatic events and to address the spiritual needs of individuals, families, and communities.
Candidates are eligible to become Disaster Spiritual Care responders if they meet ONE of the following criteria and provide documentation and endorsement:
Candidate is a board-certified chaplain, or
Candidate is a professional chaplain (paid or volunteer), or
Candidate is a leader of a local faith community or faith-based organization
