Board Member Position Overview

HISTORY: From Nest to Wings is an organization that grew out of parents' and students' desire to know more about the college search process. Initially, From Nest to Wings was a project of Chapter II Colorado, P.E.O. As the project grew, the Nest volunteers recognized the need for a more independent structure. In 2018 From Nest to Wings became a separate, stand-alone non-profit organization. Since then, Nest has created a Board of Directors and worked to build financing and program provision structures. To this day, all staff members are volunteers.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEMBER POSITION: These individuals work to provide consistency to the organization. The Board acts as a sounding board, guardrails to keep the organization within non-profit organization best practices, and provide public representation of Nest amongst a diversity of communities. Specific responsibilities are outlined in the Board of Directors Roles and Responsibilities. Board members are expected to contribute time, energy, ideas, and influence to From Nest to Wings services, structure, and staff and provide fiscal contribution at a rate comfortable for the individual is an expectation of the position.

STAFFING: Currently, From Nest to Wings has a group of energetic volunteers who work hard to publish the monthly newsletter, coordinate fundraising, manage logistics, record and track our finances, and develop and provide educational resources to meet our mission. The only payments made by Nest to individuals are for specific skills related to our video program.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR: One individual is responsible for keeping From Nest to Wings coordinated and moving forward on the expectations, programming, and goals outlined by the staff and Board members for Nest. Currently, this is a volunteer position, although the current Board has indicated a willingness to pay the individual when Nest funding levels allow.

WORK TEAM VOLUNTEERS: Job responsibilities are outlined for positions with From Nest to Wings. A group of volunteers manages the logistics, fundraising, marketing, and product development and provision for Nest. This group is dedicated, energetic, and full of ideas.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION COMMITMENT: The Nondiscrimination Policy of From Nest to Wings is posted on our website. The Nest staff and Board members are committed to bringing a variety of backgrounds, experiences, identities, communities, and viewpoints to our staff, programming, and outlook on all of the services we offer. Our Non-Discrimination Statement is available on our website.

SERVICES OFFERED: From Nest to Wings provides

Mission Statement

From Nest to Wings provides tools and trusted resources to all high school students, parents and guardians as they navigate the transition to post high school educational opportunities.

Description

From Nest to Wings provides workshops and conferences designed to help high school students and their parents prepare for the college, community college, trade school, and university search, application and first year experience. We work with area high schools to compliment the strong work they do to help students plan their future. Our programming fills in the blanks and targets parents as well as students. We are working to develop online resources to support our classroom experiences and our monthly newsletter. Our programming is strong and our program evaluations reflect a true appreciation for our work.

From Nest to Wings has been in existence for 8 years. Our first seven years we were a program within another community organization. For the past year, we have been a stand-alone 501 (c) (3) organization. Our last year has had a binary focus, first on our programming and second in establishing a Board of Directors, organization structure, job descriptions, and goals for the future. We are ready for the future!
