Volunteers are needed to shop for groceries for older, home-bound adults. Volunteers will collect shopping lists, shop at requested locations, and deliver groceries and receipts to participating seniors. Volunteers must be able to lift and carry groceries to, and in some cases, inside the door of a residence or apartment, observing current covid-19 mitigation guidelines.

Volunteers are scheduled at their convenience weekdays or weekends. You can accept single, one-time assignments or become a regular, 2-week shopper for a specific older adult.

All volunteers must complete or provide a PA Criminal Background Clearance (current within last 3 years) as well as the PA Child Abuse Clearance (current within the last 5 years).

Mission Statement

In Service of Seniors: Pittsburgh (ISOS) and Open Your Heart to a Senior in Westmoreland County are programs of Wesley Family Services with a mission to maximize the independence of older adults in Allegheny County and Westmoreland County through practical volunteer-based supports.

In Service of Seniors: Pittsburgh and Open Your Heart to a Senior (OYHS) are part of an initiative of the United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania. Seniors who need some extra support to live independently at home and feel connected to their community are matched with volunteers in their neighborhood.

Volunteers are able to have flexible/self-service scheduling which allows volunteers to view and select activities that they would like to do. Some of the activities available are grocery shopping for or with an older adult, providing rides to appointments, friendly visiting, helping a senior with low vision read their mail, and more! Some of our opportunities are suspended at this time due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Please contact us for a current list of available opportunities.

In Allegheny County, we also offer Medicare counseling through our APPRISE program and home safety checks for seniors through the Safety for Seniors program.

We'll work with your schedule.
