Volunteer now with Healthy Cities Tutoring!

Reach a child. Touch a Family. Build a community.
It only takes one hour a week to make a positive impact on a child’s life!

Join our community of volunteers who range in age from 14-96 and provide one-on-one tutoring and mentoring to students for 45 to an hour a week to improve their academic performance, engagement in learning, and self-esteem. Volunteers work with one student in person at the school library or online, helping with reading, writing, math facts, homework, and skill building.

We need volunteers more than ever

We are always recruiting new tutors and the need has grown this year as students return to school. We hope you or someone you know will get involved in this rewarding volunteer experience.

Last year, despite the pandemic and the closure of local schools, Healthy Cities Tutoring provided remote tutoring to 375 elementary and middle school students in 13 San Carlos and Redwood City schools. This year, we are eager to get back to in-person tutoring, and are flexible if tutoring remotely fits better with your schedule.

Mission Statement

Healthy Cities Tutoring helps kids who struggle to succeed in school. Community volunteers provide one-on-one tutoring and mentoring for children to improve their academic success, engagement in learning and self-esteem.

Description

Healthy Cities Tutoring is a volunteer-based tutoring program that currently supports students in kindergarten through eighth grade in thirteen public schools in San Carlos and Redwood City. The mission of the organization is to help kids who struggle to succeed in school. Community volunteers provide one-on-one tutoring and mentoring for children to improve their academic success, engagement in learning and self-esteem. The services are provided at no cost to the families who have children enrolled.

It is our goal to serve every student in need and ensure that every child referred to us for services receives a tutor. We are working to serve more of the students on our waiting lists and reach more of the students who are below grade level in our schools.

The tutor and student meet once a week for an hour. This is a one-on-one relationship where child has his or her "own" special tutor. The tutor and student work on reading, math, study skills and homework depending on the student’s needs.

With COVID all tutoring has moved online via the computer for the 2020-2021 school year.
