ORGANIZATION: Bags Into Beds

Image_202007130957

We are looking for someone in Los Angeles who is eager to make an impact on the amount of plastic pollution plaguing the city while uplifting those experiencing homelessness. You will assist in the organization and creation of pillows stuffed entirely with soft single-use plastics. You will be amazed at how comfortable they are.

Work will be conducted at our workspace within the EcoSet warehouse in Glendale.

The goal is to create 110 pillows for Hope of the Valley, one of the largest homelessness initiatives in LA, by Juny 18 while establishing a streamlined process so that creating pillows in the future is streamlined.

All of the needed materials and infrastructure are set in place. All we need is you!
To give a better idea of what the work will look like - a volunteer will assist with cutting fabric into the necessary pillow size and if they are comfortable using a sewing machine, sewing the fabric to become the pillow's exterior. We also use a shredder to break down the plastic into the stuffing that goes into the pillows. To do this we make sure the plastic doesn't have any stickers or potential contaminants on the bags and then into the shredder they go. Easy peasy.

We look forward to working with you!

Mission Statement

Protecting the environment from plastic film pollution while uplifting the homeless literally and figuratively.

Description

Bags Into Beds is a 501(c)(3) that uses plastic bags and other films as a plush stuffing in beds for the homeless inhabiting southern California. The immediate goal of the project is to prevent plastic films from entering landfills, waterways and other natural areas while repurposing the plastic for something of greater use. The immediate goal is to employ individuals to aid in the manufacturing of and distribution of said beds to communities in need around the state. However, we are currently focused on refining the concept to better serve the almost 60,000 homeless individuals in L.A.
