Respite volunteers provide care for individuals with disabilities, giving their family and opportunity to interact in the world in ways they would not be able to otherwise. This could be resting, going on an outing with a friend, etc.
Respite is unstructured programing, requiring that volunteers be willing to engage with the individuals in care through reading, playing, arts and crafts, etc. Respite will typically last round 4 hours.
Volunteers also have an opportunity to provide respite through connection groups. Connection groups are inclusive friendship groups based around common interests. In these groups, volunteers would assist with activities, and simply be present with the participants.

Mission Statement
Connection Point’s mission is to support, serve and affirm individuals and the families of individuals who are differently abled through advocating and promoting inclusion; building genuine friendships; and by connecting families with already existing services in the city of Kalamazoo.
Description
Connection Point is a new ministry of The Point Community Center associated with Centerpoint Church. The Point Community Center was opened in 2009 with the vision of bringing communities together. After Centerpoint Church conducted a community survey, it was discovered that local residents desired a place to connect relationally, stay healthy through exercise, and learn more about the Bible without the intimidation factor of attending church. Connection Point was born from the same vision as many aspects of a traditional service make the church unreachable for many differently abled families.
Over the last month, a survey conducted cooperatively by more than 10 local agencies concluded that the two largest gaps in services among differently abled communities in Kalamazoo are:
- Building genuine relationships and friendships, and
- Providing services for those who do not qualify for medicaid ages birth to 18 years.
The desire of Connection Point Ministries is to provide both respite and social groups and opportunities to families and individuals who fall within those need groups.
