SELECTIVE SERVICE SYSTEM

Are You Interested in Serving Your Community - Your Nation?

Even though there is no draft today, there is a need to be ready in case a National emergency requires Selective Service to provide additional personnel to augment our volunteer U.S Forces.

Selective Service is looking for men and women who would be willing to serve as members of local boards. Local Board Members are volunteers appointed by the President. They play an important community role closely connected with our Nation’s defense. Potential members must be citizens, at least 18 years old, not employed in any law enforcement job, not an active or retired member of the Armed Forces and not have been convicted of any criminal offense. Men must also be in compliance with the registration requirement of the Selective Service.

If you are interested in serving and meet the requirements above, please submit your information on our website at https://www.sss.gov/Volunteers/Request-Info

About Selective Service System - New Jersey Local Boards

Location:

3650 Saylors Pond Road, Fort Dix, NJ 08640, US

Mission Statement

Selective Service Local Board members are volunteers appointed by the President of the United States. They play an important community role closely connected with our nation's defense. If a military draft becomes necessary, approximately 2,000 Local Boards throughout America would decide which young men in each community receive deferments, postponements, or exemptions from military service based on federal guidelines.

Description

A Selective Service Local Board is a group of five citizen volunteers whose mission, upon a draft, will be to decide who among the registrants in their community will receive deferments, postponements, or exemption from military service based on the individual registrant's circumstances and beliefs.

How Local Board Members are Appointed
Local Board members are appointed by the Director of Selective Service in the name of the President, on recommendations made by their respective state governors or an equivalent public official. If you are interest in serving as a Local Board member, you may apply online for an application package. Some requirements to be a board member are that they be:

  • U.S. citizens

  • at least 18 years old

  • not a retired or active member of the Armed Forces or any Reserve component

  • live in the area in which the board has jurisdiction

  • be willing to spend enough time at the position.

The Board Member program is one of the primary components of the Selective Service System. Over 11,000 volunteers are currently trained in Selective Service regulations and procedures so that if a draft is reinstated, they will be able to fulfill their obligations fairly and equitably. Board members undergo an initial 8-hour training session and then participate in annual training in which they review sample cases similar to real-life situations.
