ORGANIZATION: American Red Cross of Nebraska-Iowa Region

International humanitarian law (IHL) is a set of rules that restrict the means and methods of warfare while protecting civilians, prisoners of war and wounded soldiers. The four Geneva Conventions-which form the foundation of IHL-are the only treaties in the world that have been ratified by all nations. As part of the Geneva Conventions, all countries are tasked with educating their population about IHL. The American Red Cross assists with IHL education for the American public.

Purpose

The Regional Coordinator for the International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Youth Action Campaign (YAC) coordinates the program at a regional level. The YAC informs youth ages 13-24 about IHL and encourages youth to build a peer-to-peer awareness campaign on an IHL topic. Through the IHL Action Campaign, teams design and implement a program-such as a simulation, flash mob, school newspaper column or petition-to teach their peers and local community about the rules of war.

Description

Since our founding by Clara Barton on May 21, 1881, the American Red Cross has been dedicated to serving people in need. We received our first congressional charter in 1900 and to this day we are tasked by the federal government with providing services to members of the American armed forces and their families as well as providing disaster relief in the United States and around the world.

Today, as throughout our long history, the Red Cross depends on generous contributions of time, blood, and money from the American public to support our lifesaving services and programs.
