ORGANIZATION: SAFE SISTERS CIRCLE


Circle Chats is The Safe Sisters Circle’s youtube channel where we invite prominent guests, including executive directors, activists, survivors, political leaders and changemakers, to discuss topics relevant to the Black women survivors and the community that supports them. The ideal person for this volunteer position is someone who is survivor centered, culturally competent, charismatic, has video editing/posting experience, great time management skills, creativity, and loves talking with people and networking. The networking possibilities of this position are endless since the Host will work closely with The Safe Sisters Circle’s Executive Director and our prominent guests in the making of the Circle Chats. The person chosen for this role will also obtain valuable interviewing journalistic interviewing skills. The Circle Chats Host will support the work of The Safe Sisters Circle by expanding the reach of our mission through the Circle Chats and increasing public awareness of culturally responsive work on behalf of Black woman survivors. We are looking for a highly motivated, passionate and thoughtful individual who is committed to the work of advancing the interests of Black women survivors of intimate partner abuse.


We are looking for applicants with the following qualifications:

  • Enrollment in or completion of an accredited law, journalism, communications or other relevant educational program;
  • The ability to commit 15 to 20 hours a month to work on Circle Chats;
  • Demonstrated commitment to women’s issues, gender based violence, and intimate partner abuse;
  • Survivor-centered and culturally-competent focus, with an interest in issues impacting Black women survivors;
  • Positive attitude and a warm and encouraging personality;
  • Excellent research skills;
  • Experience conducting interviews a plus;
  • Experience recording, editing and posting videos to social media;
  • Excellent networking and communication skills;
  • Creativity and strong messaging skills;
  • Excellent time management and project management skills;
  • Ability to take direction and accept constructive feedback;
  • Ability to work well independently as well as in team environment;

Mission Statement

The Safe Sisters Circle is a women of color founded and operated organization that provides culturally specific, trauma informed, and holistic services to young Black women and girl survivors of domestic violence and/or sexual abuse in Washington, DC's Ward 7 and 8.

Description

Right now our main projects are our East of the River Women's Legal Services Project and Keep Black Girls Safe DC (legal project) providing survivors with representation in Civil Protection Order hearings and family law cases. The Safe Sisters Circle will provide these legal services while addressing the various barriers our clients face as a result of their past trauma as well as our clients’ disadvantages based on their cultural, ethnic, social, and/or sexual identities.
