ATTN: Due to COVID-19 restrictions, The Phoenix is offering programs 100% virtually. We are currently seeking volunteers who can support our programs in-person once these restrictions are lifted in the future.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you're interested in donating 2 hours a week to make a positive impact in the lives of millions, lending your love of fitness and passion for the recovery community, and making lasting connections please contact us to start volunteering. We're currently seeking program support volunteers in the LA (westside)/LB regions to help drive culture, participation and support our instructors once COVID restrictions are lifted and it is safe to do so. For the time being, classes are being held online.

We host daily, FREE classes and events where the only requirement to attend is at least 48 hours of continuous sobriety. The only way we are able to provide these services free is thanks to the generous donations of time and talent by our volunteer coaches.

WHO WE ARE: The Phoenix is an innovative nonprofit organization that helps people recover from substance use disorders and heal from related adverse experiences by leveraging the intrinsic transformative power of social connection and physical activity.

The goal of The Phoenix is to help as many people as possible find a clear path to recovery, so we make every effort to remove any barriers to getting involved with our community - this includes financial barriers.

Over the past 12 years, Phoenix has grown from a small organization serving a few dozen people in Boulder, Colorado to a national movement that has served over 36,000 individuals. Phoenix programming is now available in more than 41 cities across 24 states.

OUR IMPACT: Phoenix assesses its impact and outcomes by administering a three- and a six-month evaluation survey to all members. Results show that more than 80% of members make significant improvements after just three months of participation.

Survey results also demonstrate the long-term impact of participation with 8 out of 10 active members remaining sober at 6 months and more than two-thirds of those who relapsed stating that The Phoenix helped them return to sobriety.

Our volunteers are on the front line of battling substance use disorder every day. They are anchors for our sober active community and act as key resources for those looking to maintain and strengthen their recovery. This position is an incredible opportunity to be of service to this community and give back.

Volunteer Roles and Responsibilities: Program Support Volunteers will...
  • Facilitate outdoor programing weekly by ensuring all participants are registered, supplies are readily available and provide general support to the instructor like setting/cleaning up before and after workouts
  • Build relationships with community members and share knowledge about The Phoenix
  • Create a fun, emotionally & physically safe, inclusive, and accessible environment at all Phoenix events
  • Act as recovery resource, offering our curated list of treatment help to those who ask for it.
Program Support Volunteers are essential members in helping us build our sober active community.

In order to become a volunteer, you will need to...
  • Commit to at least 6 months of volunteering (support just one program, 1-2 hours, per week minimum)
  • Complete required Phoenix trainings (Phoenix 101 and FEPSIA) -- all online
  • Attend 2 Phoenix classes (we have virtual)
  • 18 years or older
  • 48 hours of continuous sobriety
  • Bonus: experience in recovery or an interest/passion in mental health/community development

Covid-19 Precautions: All programs are currently held virtually for the time being. Once we return to in-person programming, all activities are held outdoors, social distancing is practiced and PPE will be provided to all instructors.

Mission Statement

The Phoenix offers a free sober active community to individuals who have suffered from a substance use disorder and to those who choose a sober life. Using a peer support model, we help members heal and rebuild their lives while also striving to eliminate stigma around recovery.

Description

The ultimate impact Phoenix seeks is to help individuals not only achieve sobriety, but to thrive in recovery. The Phoenix Model is unique because of its non-clinical approach that uses the power of human connection and positive coping mechanisms through physical activity to help people heal from the underlying causes of addiction.

Phoenix peer instructors use an experiential approach that leverages innate goal-setting association with engagement in physical activities while facilitating a positive and supportive experience, allowing team members to shed the defense mechanisms that have historically kept them isolated. By bringing people together, Phoenix creates a community where people can heal, obtain essential life skills, and practice effective social interaction. Research suggests facilitating physical activity, social connection and community are potent strategies for promoting health and healing from disease.
