ROOTS Young Adult Shelter

ROOTS Young Adult Shelter

ROOTS is seeking additional volunteers to help out at our interim location in Queen Anne at 157 Roy St. Seattle, WA before we move to our new home back in the U-District. Beginning on the night of Thursday, December 17th, all shelter operations will take place at the Queen Anne location until at least the end of January 2021. Typically, we suggest making a 6 month commitment but welcome anyone who is able to help at our interim location in Queen Anne for any length of time. You must be at least 18 years of age to volunteer with us.

ROOTS is a young adult emergency shelter that is almost exclusively volunteer run. We are open 365 days a year, with up to 45 guests per night between the ages of 18-25. Volunteers are needed to help with operational tasks but most importantly volunteers will provide social support to the folks who stay here and build meaningful relationships. While time has gifted us with new volunteers, we are still in great need of additional volunteers at this moment.

We require all volunteers and staff to wear gloves and face masks throughout the duration of their shift. Volunteers are free to bring in their own face masks or other PPE, and we can provide gloves and disposable face masks on-site. The wellbeing of our volunteers is of the utmost importance, and we only ask you to commit to volunteering if you are safely able to do so. Upon arriving to each shift your Volunteer Supervisor or other staff will ask you questions listed on the ROOTS COVID-19 screening guide and will take your temperature. Staff and guests are screened in the same way upon entering the space. We appreciate your understanding in this process.

Please stay home if you are feeling under the weather, have had recent contact with anyone demonstrating Covid-19 symptoms, or if you yourself have experienced a dry cough, fever, or other Covid-19 symptoms within the last 14 days. Older adults and those with chronic health conditions are discouraged from pursuing our in-shelter Evening and Morning volunteer roles at this time. Our Sanitation role, which maintains a greater level of social distancing, is still available to everyone.

The King County Health Department made a visit to our shelter and completed a health assessment of which we scored an impressively high score for social distancing maintenance, cleaning, and sanitation. This is all thanks to our amazing volunteers! However, in order to continue this level of sanitation and safety for our guests, volunteers, and staff, we are in need of additional volunteers at this moment.

Evening Sanitation Shift (6pm-8pm): Volunteers will come in before the shelter opens to disinfect all shelter beds and deep clean the shelter space. We work to limit the number of volunteers during the Sanitation shift to help maintain social distancing.

If you can help during this time and are healthy enough to do so, fill out an application on our website at http://www.rootsinfo.org/get-involved/volunteer/volunteer-application/ for your own welcome packet and all the information you will need to volunteer with us.

Mission Statement

Rising Out of the Shadows (ROOTS) is a University District organization based in compassion and committed to social justice that fosters change and empowers human potential by providing critical services to street-involved, homeless, and other low-income persons and through supporting service providers and faith communities in creating a comprehensive network.

Description

The ROOTS Young Adult Shelter (YAS) serves homeless individuals between the ages of 18 and 25 and is the only shelter program in Seattle specifically addressing the needs of homeless young adults. These young people are too old to access youth shelter programs but often feel unwelcome or threatened in emergency programs serving older single adults. YAS services include: clean bedding and sheets; dinner and hot breakfast; healthy and hygiene supplies and services, including laundry and showers; onsite case management and referral to other support and transitional services; visits by healthcare providers, including public health nurse and acupuncturist; educational materials related to risk avoidance, harm reduction, and other area programs; supportive and nurturing relationships between program staff and guests.
