ORGANIZATION: HELPING THE BEHAVIORALLY CHALLENGING CHILD

  • 6 people are interested

Helping the Behaviorally Challenging Child in Tustin (HBCC) is a California Nonprofit Public Benefit Corporation. HBCC teaches a revolutionary, evidence-based approach for helping children with behavioral challenges. Through caregiver training, support and referrals to clinical services, we promote the understanding that challenging youth lack the skill, not the will, to behave well - specifically, skills related to problem solving, flexibility and frustration tolerance. Unlike traditional models of discipline, HBCC teaches an approach that avoids the use of power, control and motivational procedures and instead focuses on teaching at-risk youth the skills they need to succeed using a relationship-based, trauma-informed paradigm.

The approach we teach - Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS) - was developed at the Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Psychiatry, the #1-ranked Department of Psychiatry in the United States. The approach is proven to reduce challenging behavior, teach kids the skills they lack, and build relationships with the adults in their lives. CPS is listed on the Blue Menu of Evidence-Based Psychosocial Interventions for Youth from the PracticeWise Evidence-Based Services Database, and on the California Evidence-Based Clearinghouse for Child Welfare. The multiple studies conducted on CPS reveal tremendous benefits including significant reduction in parental stress, significant improvement in children’s executive functioning skills, 86% average reduction in physical restraint, 73% reduction in children’s oppositional behaviors at school, 71% fewer self-inflicted injuries, and improvements in parent-child interactions and feeling of competence.

HBCC’s mission is to help the youth we serve lead more productive and inclusive lives by teaching families, professionals and academic and other institutions to implement this compassionate and proven approach with fidelity. To fulfill this mission, HBCC needs the support of dedicated volunteers to secure donations and raise money to fund our work.

Duties of the volunteer fundraiser:

  • Research fundraising opportunities. These could be restaurant fundraisers, silent auctions, #Giving Tuesday campaigns, peer to peer fundraising activities, finding prospective donors, etc. Get creative!
  • Present your ideas to the Board of Directors for approval
  • Execute your fundraising plan
  • Track and report on funds raised

Our volunteers must be compassionate individuals desiring to support our mission of helping at-risk youth and their caregivers. The volunteer fundraiser must be creative, organized, personable, responsive and able to work independently with minimal guidance.
