IPNLF has been officially registered in the United Kingdom as a Charity (charitable organisation) since 2012. Its charitable objectives are focused on promoting sustainable development through the conservation of the marine environment and to strengthen the ability of local coastal communities and small-scale fishers to conserve biodiversity, safeguard food security, build climate resilience and eradicate poverty.

IPNLF works across science, policy and the seafood sector, using an evidence-based, solutions-focused approach, directed by our Board of Trustees, with additional guidance provided by our Scientific & Technical Advisory Committee (STAC) and Market Advisory Group (MAG).

With approximately 800 million people dependent upon fisheries and aquaculture for their livelihoods around the world, the global seafood industry has a clear responsibility to deliver upon the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. IPNLF’s core activities of supporting and promoting environmentally sustainable and socially responsible one-by-one tuna fisheries are well aligned with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), contributing to the sustainable management of the world’s tuna fisheries, while also safeguarding the livelihoods they support.

The IPNLF launched its new 5-year Strategic Plan in August 2020. Our new strategy offers an opportunity to realise our mission of empowering responsible fisheries to give back to the seas and people that depend on them, so that we can see a world with thriving fisheries that work in balance with nature by catching one fish at a time!

We believe businesses can play an important role in ensuring sustainable development. Especially now more than ever when repercussions of the global pandemic of 2020 unfold, highlighting the vulnerability of local fishing communities. While the impacts of the pandemic are still unfolding, and we remain uncertain about the full extent of the consequences on our work, we remain committed to serve our main beneficiaries, the one-by-one fishers and communities connected to them, to the best of our ability.

IPNLF is currently governed by a Board of nine Trustees made up of diverse professionals with skills and experience in science, fisheries, commerce, the non-profit sector and other relevant fields. Our Trustees are responsible for the oversight of the IPNLF’s management and administration and ensuring that its charitable objectives are met. The main duties of Trustees include the following:

• Ensuring that our Charity is carrying out its purposes for the public benefit;
• Complying with our Charity’s governing document and the law;
• Acting in our Charity’s best interests;
• Managing our Charity’s resources responsibly;
• Acting with reasonable care and skill;
• Ensuring our Charity is accountable.

We are currently looking to grow the Charity’s board by bringing two new Trustees on board.
It is important for us that IPNLF's board reflects the communities we work with and that it is diversified in terms of gender, culture and geographic representation. We are confident that by having Trustees with real experiences, our decision-making will be better informed and more supportive of our key beneficiaries, the small-scale fisheries and the communities that depend on them.

Potential Trustees’ skills should include fundraising (and network of funders); income generation; HR training, IT/systems, legal skills and communications.

Trustees are expected to provide wise counsel and constructive challenge to the Managing Director and senior management team and operate with mutual respect and co-operation.

Board membership offers an exciting opportunity to help guide and support IPNLF’s rapid global expansion. We are seeking to appoint highly motivated individuals that will provide valuable contributions to support IPNLF in achieving its mission and delivering on its organisational strategy.

Successful candidate(s) will be pragmatic and resourceful, proactive in networking, and entrepreneurial in identifying and nurturing opportunities for potential future conservation funding partnerships.

We are currently expanding the gender and geographic representation of the Board and would be particularly interested in candidates from Asia, Africa and the Americas or candidates who have strong links to these regions. Candidates should have excellent partnership development experience, a high degree of emotional intelligence, and sensitivity to the needs and interests of IPNLF’s partner communities and stakeholders.

The term of office for all Board appointments is three years and the time commitment is approximately six to ten days per year, including attending board meetings held internationally.

The role is unremunerated, but reasonable expenses will be covered.
