Middle School College Mentor Position Summary:

College Mentors are caring volunteers who meet with students for 2 hours an average each week. These meetings use an age appropriate, research-based curriculum on subject areas such as career exploration, college access, life and social skills, cultural and recreational events, service-learning projects, time management and academic goal setting.

Mentors collaborate with their Program Coordinator to promote a quality experience for mentors and mentees. Hispanic Services Council asks volunteers to be flexible and responsive to changes during the meeting. It is important for mentors to conduct themselves professionally including, but not limited to; being on time, following Hispanic Services Council and Hillsborough County Public School District policies and procedures, being responsive, and following through with program expectations.

Mentors should exhibit a positive attitude in relation with fellow volunteers, school staff, students, families, and work as a team member with program staff on all events and activities.

Primary Responsibilities

To be a positive adult role model in a young person’s life. Mentors help students set and achieve goals in the areas of social skills and academic and mentor / mentee relationships.

Time Investment

  • Engage in educational activities with mentees at least once a week.
  • Attendance at initial Volunteer Orientation training required
  • Approximate commitment of 2 hours per week - Average of 4 meetings per month
  • Weekday hours required.

Qualifications

  • Has a passion to help young people and demonstrates the ability to work well with students of different ages and diverse backgrounds
  • A passion to serve, enthusiasm, dedication, and willingness to commit to mentoring for 12 full weeks.
  • Must be able to either travel to and from meeting locations within the Hillsborough County area or be available virtually to their mentees.

Minimum Expectations

  • Work one on one with a student or with a group of 3-4 students.
  • Maintains regular contact with HSC staff and is responsive to phone calls and e-mails
  • Arrives prepared and ready to participate in each meeting.
  • Maintains regular contact with mentees.

  • Conducts research and locates resources that would be beneficial for the mentee.
  • Conducts research and locates resources that would be beneficial for the mentee’s parents.
  • Be available to the mentee outside of weekly meeting to answer any questions they may have
