Best Friends Animal Society is on a mission to end the killing of cats and dogs in America's shelters by 2025. Want to help save lives? Best Friends needs your expertise to review ordinances to help stop the killing of cats and dogs in animal shelters across the country. This position advances our No Kill mission primarily via legislative efforts. It is responsible for supporting the Advocacy Team in crafting, advancing and passing strategic legislation that will humanely and directly reduce the killing of cats and dogs in shelters.
The Volunteer Attorney may engage in one or more of the following:
Assist Advocacy Team attorneys in monitoring, analyzing and drafting state, city and county legislation, as well as policies and regulations that promote no kill, prevent the adoption of measures that enable the eradication of free-roaming cats and prevent breed discrimination.
Assist Legislative Team attorneys in crafting language and lobbying officials to adopt humane statutes, ordinances and regulations that are designed to reduce the killing in shelters.
Performing legislative and administrative research related to the Best Friends mission.
Assisting in drafting and reviewing ordinances, contracts, memorandums of understanding and amicus briefs as requested.
Assisting in litigation efforts that serves to improve the status of dogs and cats, protects Best Friends’ programming or legislative measures and/or challenges opponents’ efforts to undermine these goals.
