Overview:

We are looking for a Creative Writing Instructor with a passion for working with children at the middle and high school levels. Help students improve their academic writing through innovative writing projects in a fun, supportive online environment. The instructor will prepare students to perform a routine as part of a virtual showcase at the close of the semester. Great opportunity for a current or retired ELA teacher, copy editor or copy writer.

Volunteer Duties:

• Conduct virtual classes for a group of youth once or twice per week
• Must draft a full curriculum that outlines all lessons from week-to-week and materials needed to perform projects.

• Teach students on the styles of writing like poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction etc.

• Engage the students during the class and help them develop imaginative and analytical thinking skills.
• Prepare students for a virtual showcase performance in March 2021.
• Complete weekly session notes following each class
• Regularly communicate with parents to provide updates on their child’s progress, reminders about upcoming sessions, materials list for individual sessions, and other communications as needed.
• Maintain consistent communication with program directors via email and participation in scheduled facilitator meetings to update on student progress, class attendance, etc.

Volunteer Requirements:

• Familiar with Common Core ELA standards
• Prior experience teaching or tutoring teens or young children
• A graduate/college student Majoring in English
• Excellent grammatical and storytelling skills, interpersonal & communication skills
• Comfortable working in a virtual environment
• Must be 18+ years old

Location: Remote

Hours of work and duration of commitment: Must be available 5 hours per week (Monday - Friday) between the hours of 2pm and 6pm EST. Minimum 3 month commitment from January through March 2021.
