Magazine Publishers Family Literacy Project

Literacy_Boxes

Would you like to help children and families to read, while volunteering at home? Help to pack our Literacy Boxes that hold about 25 magazine each for shipment to literacy programs across the USA. You will pack the magazines in USPS medium flat rate boxes. We will supply you with magazines, boxes and shipping tape.

How it works:

  1. Sign up here at VolunteerMatch
  2. We will email you directions to the Ohio Literacy Bank warehouse in Johnstown to pick up your magazines, boxes, and tape.
  3. Drop off completed boxes at the Ohio Literacy Bank warehouse or ship them from your house**.
** If you have a printer, we can email you postage labels for the Literacy Boxes, and we can schedule Postal Service pickup of the completed Literacy Boxes at your home.

Mission Statement

You can help literacy end poverty. With titles for every reading age, interest, and language, magazines and comics are the most powerful literacy engines on the planet. Illiteracy and poverty hurt everyone. UNICEF reports that 1 Billion children live in poverty, worldwide. Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) says two-thirds of U.S. poor (12 million+) have zero books at home. Research shows that poor infants hear 30 million fewer words when their brains are developing for life. Adults unable to read were once children who didn't learn how. MagazineLiteracy.org has an enormous supply of magazines and comics for literacy to end poverty. Thank you for your help to get them into the hands of eager at-risk readers.

Description

MagazineLiteracy.org gets new and recycled magazines to at-risk children and families who want to learn and love to read. Our primary focus areas are mentoring and job training, readers in homeless and domestic violence shelters, hungry families receiving groceries from food pantries, and foster kids. Too many people can't read - a cereal box, a job description, or this web page. Illiterate adults were once children who missed their chance to learn to read. A child who cannot read is unable to do well in any school subject. We help feed kids, teens, and adults hungry to read and succeed. Join with us to change the world - one reader at a time! Volunteer today! Thank you.
