About Code for San Jose:

Code for San Jose is an all-volunteer organization. We are a chapter of Code for America.

As a chapter, we focus on civic innovation and government technology. We welcome everyone interested in solving community problems through technology, user experience research, and community partnerships.

Our mission is to make community services more transparent, accessible, and equitable by collaborating with local government and other community-based organizations on civic projects.

We have over 30 active volunteers with over 8 active projects. Our leadership team consists of 9 other directors, 2 executive directors and 6 project leaders.

As a group, we meet every other Thursday at 6:30 PM PST to sync up and work on projects.

About the Role:

Project Description:

In the 2017 San Jose flood, 14,000 people were displaced, 700 buildings were damaged, and the losses amounted to $100 million. There was a lack of real time flooding information which caused the disaster response to be delayed. To help our community prepare for the future, Code for San Jose is helping a local high school student build out an automated way to detect floods using traffic camera feeds and an AI algorithm.

Project Manager Goals and Responsibilities:

  • Keep the project’s momentum up by checking in regularly with team members
  • Create and maintain a roadmap for the project
  • Organize coding volunteer efforts
  • Keep the Code for San Jose executive team up to date with how the project is progressing
  • Identify key relationships that the project needs in order to succeed.

Mission Statement

Government can work for the people, by the people, in the digital age. We believe government at all levels can and should work well for all people. We use insights and ideas from real people to guide us to real solutions that break down barriers to meet community needs and improve government in meaningful ways. Let’s make it work for everyone.

Description

Code for America is committed to building a team as diverse as the nation we serve. We’re made up of people-centered problem solvers: technologists, advocates, storytellers, and organizers from many different backgrounds and communities around the country. We merge the best parts of technology, nonprofit, and government.

We believe government at all levels can and should work well for everyone- and the mindful use of technology makes it possible.

We’re known for building digital tools, but the work doesn’t stop there. We seek to transform government by showing what’s possible when communities are included in policy and service design. We use insights and ideas from real people to guide us to real solutions that break down barriers to meet community needs and improve government in meaningful ways.
