Volunteers and their certified Therap Dogs will visit hospice patients in their homes or care facility to bring them comfort and companionship. Dogs are temperament tested and require certification. Handlers must be 18 years or older, and will undergo the same training program that all potential hospice volunteers take including philosophy of hospice care, end-of-life issues, and patient confidentiality. Additionally, background checks and screenings will be done.

The hospice team is supportive in every way necessary to honor the wishes of the patient. Hospice is not about giving up hope; it is about doing everything possible to live life to its full capacity.
Description
UnityPoint Hospice volunteers are an integral part of the Hospice care team. Volunteers can provide direct and indirect patient support. Direct support includes: bedside companionship, respite care for the family, patient life review, supportive phone calls, letter writing to the patient, hand massage, listening to music, playing a musical instrument, pet therapy. Indirect support includes: running errands, greeting and screening visitors at Taylor House, administrative tasks, answering phones, etc. We work with each volunteer to help determine the right fit and area in which to help.
