Austin Free-Net has been working diligently to bridge the digital divide in Austin, TX since 1995. We do so by providing technological access (computers and internet) and basic digital skills training to all in need of it. We are proud to be partnered with the City of Austin and other community organizations in providing the only public access computer lab open to the public during pandemic. The need for technology and access is an essential one in this day and age, and this difficult time has further illuminated the need as being a critical one. Please join us in serving Austin’s most marginalized community members as they fight against barriers of income instability, food and housing insecurity, and high-risk healthcare needs.
While our services are available to all, we focus on the members of our community who need help the most. This includes those that are experiencing homelessness, those who are reintegrating from the criminal justice system, low income families, the aging community, immigrants and veterans.
We are always seeking volunteers to assist in public access computer labs, virtual classrooms, and with a multitude of administrative and technical needs. If you have a heart for giving, a desire to serve marginalized communities, and consider yourself technologically savvy, please contact us right away.
OUR CURRENT NEED IS FOR:
- Volunteer IT trainers
- Public access computer lab technicians
- Administrative assistance
- Bilingual or multilingual translators
COVID-19 PROTOCOLS:
As an essential service provider we take the pandemic and the health of our volunteers, staff and clients very seriously.
We adhere to all health and safety guidance provided by the City of Austin, Austin Public Health, and the CDC.
Our building is currently open to the public and the DeWitty Computer Lab is open at 50% capacity. The use of masks and gloves inside of the building is encouraged and we have sanitizer available to all. A volunteer lab tech would be in the room with no more than 8 clients at a time, situated at distanced work stations that are cleaned after every use.

Mission Statement
Our mission is to provide technology training and computer access to the community, fostering skills that enable people to succeed in the digital age. Austin Free-Net believes that access to the internet is imperative in the 21st century and beyond and those without the digital skills to use any digital device and specifically computers are at a disadvantage. Those most affected by the digital divide are among the most underserved groups in the Austin community. Many do not have computers or broadband connections in their homes. The digital divide means they are unable to take advantage of economic and educational opportunities.
Description
Austin Free-Net is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that was founded to provide individuals with access to community, technology training and resources, and the skills necessary to "succeed in the digital age." Since 1995, Austin Free-Net has been "working to bridge the digital divide" in the Austin, Texas, area, and now maintains more than 100 free computer stations at various cities throughout the city to support over 100,000 computer sessions each year.
Envisioning a world free of digital barriers, Austin Free-Net offers free adult computer training programs as well as low-cost computer training programs for government staff, nonprofit organizations, and small businesses. In 2016, the organization launched it Techno-Women program, a new community initiative that prepares and certifies low-income women for careers in technology through a 34-week program in COMPTIA Network and CompTIA A+ certifications.
Austin Free-Net is supported by its team of approximately 250 volunteers who provide service in the areas of IT support, administrative support, outreach, event management, and digital education. Austin Free-Net is a supporter of flexible work and in the past has hired for part-time employment opportunities.
