New York Common Pantry works toward the reduction of hunger and food insecurity through an array of programs that function to establish long-term independence for those we serve. Our whole-person approach starts with food provision through the distribution of nutritious, fresh food pantry packages in Choice Pantry and hearty balanced breakfast and dinner in the Hot Meals program.
As a volunteer, you will help provide free packages to low income families. Specific tasks include unloading trucks, lifting boxes up to 40 pounds, packing produce, and other activities as needed. Volunteers for this project must be comfortable with standing for 5.5 hours and lifting at least 40 pounds and be at least 18 years old. Please wear closed toed shoes (such as sneakers) and comfortable clothing that can get dirty.
Please note that due to COVID-19 all volunteers must wear masks (we can supply) at all times. We have gloves hand sanitizer and the facilities are cleaned regularly. In an effort to minimize exposure all staff and volunteers are working on shifts. The days that are paired together are Monday, Thursday and Friday and Tuesday and Wednesday at 109th Street. In the Bronx Tuesdays and Thursdays are paired and Mondays and Wednesdays. If you sign up for a Monday at 109th Street you can only come in on Monday, Thursday and Friday etc. Be mindful when signing up; we will cancel any shifts that don’t keep people with their teams since we strive to have the safest workplace possible. All volunteers must be 18 plus.
09:00 AM to 03:00 PM
Any day, Mon. through Fri. Help unload trucks, sort, and organize groceries. Volunteers must be available for the full shift. Heavy lifters preferred.
NONE OF THESE TIMES WORK FOR ME, BUT I CAN STILL HELP
The New York Common Pantry is dedicated to reducing hunger throughout New York City while promoting dignity and self-sufficiency.
Supplemental food is provided to seniors aged 60 and older through Nourish.
We then go further to address the reasons for food insecurity with case management services through the help of Help 365, which assists Pantry visitors in gaining access to resources, and Project Dignity, which connects homeless visitors to resources. The third vital element in our whole-person approach is education offered through our Live Healthy! program. Live Healthy! teaches children and adults about the importance of a nutritionally sound diet and active living, as well as provides them with the skills necessary to make healthier choices for their families.
