Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many students are regressing academically, and losing out on meaningful opportunities to engage in reading and learning. Our goal is to mobilize a group of volunteers who will serve as Virtual Reading Buddies to students in our partner schools. Volunteers will be trained in how to lead a 1:1 guided reading session with a student that will engage multiple senses for optimum engagement and FUN! Upon completing the training, volunteers will sign up for two 30-minute shifts (1 hr a week minimum commitment), and will be matched with a student to be their reading buddy. Lesson plans will be provided, all you have to do is show up and follow the script! This opportunity is ideal for anyone with a background in education, working with kids, or anyone who just has a love of reading! We believe that when students read more they become better readers, and this opportunity will provide families and students with the extra support they need during the pandemic.

Mission Statement

We believe that students learn best when they are engaged. Our mission is to provide multisensory learning experiences in which students engage with content and materials using more than one of their five senses. In doing so, we are able to address multiple learning modalities and tailor instruction to specific student needs. Our guiding principle is that learning should be FUN! We encourage students to learn through playing and maintain that learning takes place across a variety of settings, not just in the classroom. We aim to provide a space where students can learn and play through a series of activities that are tailored to their specific needs.

Description

Our Founder, Rachel Cason, created The Playground with the hopes of closing the opportunity gap and empowering children to unlock the skills they need to reach their full potential. Since its inception The Playground has provided 1:1 tutoring, book clubs, art clubs, and consultation to parents. In the COVID-19 Pandemic, The Playground continues to serve families and students. Throughout 2020 we’ve provided private virtual tutoring and hosted virtual book clubs, art clubs, and socially-distanced Learn and Play Days at the park. As a school teacher, Rachel continues to see the ways that students and families need support with virtual learning. Our goal is to mobilize volunteers to become Virtual Reading Buddies to provide 1:1 multisensory reading support in a virtual setting. We also aim to raise funding to provide students in our partner schools with multisensory learning kits, so they can engage all of their senses even in the context of virtual learning. We need YOU to help us achieve these goals during the 2020-2021 school year!
