ORGANIZATION: Community Action Marin

Community Action Marin (CAM) would love your help in supporting our community services programs. For over 60 years, CAM has been building a comprehensive range of services, designed to address the specific needs of families and children in the community. Our mission is to ultimately alleviate poverty, by promoting independence among low income folks in Marin. We strive to improve stability, quality of life and community connection through social services that provide the foundation to develop life skills. Our programs support clients by offering: financial management and career coaching at our Sparkpoint center, child development and child care support at our Headstart programs, energy assistance at our LIHEAP center, better nutrition provided to Headstart and Child development programs through our Central Kitchen, advocacy for mental health patients and support for families living with mental illness through our counselling programs, and our emergency family needs fund which helps people pay for unexpected necessities. All of these programs contribute to the overall improvement of standard of living in Marin.

As we look forward to 2021, Community Action Marin remains dedicated to making our community equitable and inclusive for all. Nominated as the 2020 California Nonprofit of the Year, we continue to hold our core values of service, unity, relationship, and inclusivity at the forefront of what we do. In alignment with our values, this fall we are seeking virtual and in-person volunteers to be an extension of our team as tax preparers, greeters, translators, and general volunteers for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program Fridays: January 29th - April 9th, 2021 9:00am - 12:30pm and/or 12:30pm - 4:00pm.

The VITA program allows us to provide free tax preparation services to eligible Californians in Marin County. Collaborating with our nonprofit partners, United Way Bay Area and Canal Alliance, we are able to deliver these services and provide the necessary IRS-certified training at no cost to the volunteer to make a difference in our community. As a VITA site, all volunteers are required to complete online virtual training such as the Volunteer Standards of Conduct, Intake/Interview and Quality Review, and the Volunteer Certification System and the individuals who are interested in being tax preparers are also required to complete the Advanced Tax Law Certification. Additionally, tax preparer volunteers are eligible to earn up to 14 Continuing Education credits!

If you’re interested in partnering with us to be a volunteer for this opportunity, please visit our website to view the role descriptions and then reach out to our AmeriCorps VIP Fellow, Ashley Creese, at acreese@camarin.org. If you’re sure you want to volunteer, notify Ashley and then sign up for a virtual VITA orientation. Please share these opportunities with people in your networks who you think could be interested, and consider reaching out us to learn more about how you can help.
