About WILDSTAR EQUINE ASSISTED ACTIVITIES AND THERAPY

Location:

Mission Statement

Horse SenseAbility's mission is helping underserved and at-risk youth and young adults develop life skills by working with horses in a peaceful, rural setting. Our primary focus is working with youth and young adults who have autism spectrum disorder; struggle with mental illness, particularly anxiety and depression; have experienced trauma or abuse; or live in stressful economic circumstances. We also serve young people with intellectual and physical disabilities.

Description

We have 6 core programs:

  • City to Saddle is a 1-week summer program offered at no charge to 6- to 13-year-olds from low-income families.
  • Stable Moments is a mentoring program for children who are or who have been in foster care. We match a trained volunteer mentor with a child and a horse who meet together once a week for the entire school year.
  • Wildstar Wranglers is designed to help young adults (18 to 25 years old) with autism transition from the school environment to the workplace. This vocational program that’s held in the barn setting teaches basic job skills required in any work setting, such as showing up on time, following directions, checking your work, accepting and giving feedback, identifying and performing additional tasks that need to be done, and communicating effectively with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Therapeutic riding is taught to young people 4 years old and up with an emphasis on horsemanship and partnership.
  • Community visits are offered by a registered therapy team to schools and social service organizations in the local area.
  • Physical therapy that incorporates equine movement is provided to individuals as part of their treatment plan.
