West Mesa Heat Action - Project Coordinator

Objectives - West Mesa Heat Action Project
- To plant a minimum of 100 trees at potentially seven schools in the West Mesa Heat Action project area
- To design and implement a successful tree planting for the end of the year 2021
- To be an active partner in the West Mesa Heat Action project
Role Purpose
The purpose of the Project Coordinator position is to design and implement tree plantings at the end of 2021 at up to seven schools in the West Mesa Heat Action project area. AZSA is part of the West Mesa Heat Action project run by Rio Reimagined. The tree plantings are one piece of a larger project to educate and engage the community in West Mesa on extreme heat and the role of shade and urban forestry. AZSA has committed to planting a minimum of 100 trees at schools within the project area. AZSA has already had initial conversations with the school district and will be starting walkthroughs of the schools in November/December 2020. While the actual tree plantings are not set to occur until the end of 2021, it will be important for AZSA to stay engaged in the larger project in order to ensure we are an active partner.
Responsibilities
- Participate in weekly/bi-weekly meetings with project partners for the West Mesa Heat Action project
- Work with key school officials to ensure the tree planting is designed for the needs of the school
- Setup dates and logistics for tree plantings with the Mesa School District
- Follow AZSA COVID-19 policies to ensure a safe planting
- Work with West Mesa Heat Action project team (external partners) on the acquisition of trees
- Manage tree planting budget
- Be the point person for the West Mesa Heat Action tree planting with all stakeholders
Ideal Skill Set
- Ability to organize events
- Ability to plan, coordinate, and implement projects
- Ability to learn new things quickly (e.g. proper tree planting techniques)
- Experience working with multiple partners
- Excellent time management and organizational skills
- Self-starter who is able to work independently and as a team member
- Knowledge of urban forestry/trees in Arizona
Time Commitment: Approximately 5-10 hours per week
All AZSA positions are remote, with periodic fieldwork and other necessary in-person activities specific to the particular position.
