We Care Services for Children

Through targeted, compassionate, and effective early intervention services, We Care helps young children and their families reach their full potential, regardless of their abilities or circumstances.

We Care Services for Children is currently looking to expand the membership of its Board of Directors.

The ideal candidate joins a remarkable group of dedicated and passionate volunteers whose guidance and
support ensure the continued success of We Care’s programs. We exist to help Contra Costa’s most vulnerable and at-risk young children and our Board Members provide the agency with the expertise, wisdom, and effort necessary to fulfill our mission and commitment to this community.

Who We Are
In 1960, parents of children with severe disabilities in the San Francisco Bay Area founded We Care Services for Children in an effort to address the lack of treatment options for their sons and daughters. In the years since, We Care’s programming has expanded and evolved in response to ongoing advancements in the understanding of the nature of social, emotional, and behavioral problems. Today, We Care programs and services encompass a wide array of developmental, educational, and mental health programming for very young children and their families.

Specifically,
● Our mental health programs focus primarily on treating the impact of childhood trauma related to neglect
and family or community violence
● Our developmental programs address the whole child with added emphasis on the child’s social/emotional health.

The results We Care has seen speak to the value of these changes. Today, thousands upon thousands of children and families have graduated from We Care’s programs with dramatically improved outcomes.

Why Early Intervention Matters
We Care’s focus is on the unique needs of children under 5 and the extraordinary opportunity this phase of human development provides for real and lasting change. Decades of research show that the neural circuits that create the capacity to learn and determine behavior are most flexible and "improvable" in the first five years of life. Once this window closes, it becomes increasingly difficult for these pathways - and a child’s behavior - to change.

What We Do
The way that children learn in their preschool years determines success in school, work, and life for themselves, and ultimately, our communities. We Care applies all its resources and expertise to this critical time in a child’s development. We’ve created life-changing - and life-saving programs - to help our communities’ most vulnerable children when they need us most. These services include a Developmental Program focusing on the needs of children with physical, emotional, and/or cognitive delays. We Care also provides a wide array of Mental Health programs to help children at risk of significant impairment due to abuse, neglect, or other aspects of trauma.

What We Are Looking for in our Board Members
Fundamental board responsibilities include program and resource oversight, strategic planning and organizational assessment. Given current goals, the organization is particularly interested in new board members

● Whose background, interests, and ideas strengthen We Care’s connection with the multiple diverse
communities it serves
● Will provide insights and expertise that will enhance community awareness of We Care’s unique
capabilities and services and can help build the financial support needed to sustain, enhance and expand
these programs and individuals
● Can offer insight and expertise that will enhance We Care’s efforts to advocate for the policies, programs,
and resources needed to support young children achieving their full potential.

Mission Statement

Through targeted, compassionate, and effective early intervention services, We Care helps young children and their families reach their full potential, regardless of their abilities or circumstances.

Description

Since 1960, We Care Services for Children has helped change the lives of Contra Costa County's most vulnerable children. Our work helps families deal with developmental, behavioral, emotional, and educational needs of young children. We offer treatment - mental health, occupational therapy, speech therapy, family support, and education - for children with - or at risk for - life impacting delays. Through our teaching and treatment model, we offer help to children and families increasing independence and learning, improving school readiness, and decreasing the need for special services later in life.
