Drop Off Sack Lunches for Hollywood's Hungry

Save to Favorites

Hollywood Food Coalition

WHAT: Help get food into the hands of those in our community who desperately need it. Make sack lunches in your home kitchen to be dispersed by Hollywood Food Coalition.

ABOUT THE HOLLYWOOD FOOD COALITION: Since 1987, Hollywood Food Coalition has ensured that those in need receive a warm, nutritious meal. They also provide daily needs such as clothing, sleeping bags, and hygiene items, as well as assistance with housing placement and referrals. Their new program, the Community Exchange, collects food and other donated goods and distributes them to dozens of other organizations in need.

VOLUNTEER RESPONSIBILITIES: This is an in-home volunteer opportunity. You'll purchase food items in order to assemble a minimum of ten (10) sandwich sack lunches. You'll then deliver the packed lunches to the Hollywood Food Coalition's drop-off site at Fountain Ave and Vine Street. They will in-turn, distribute the lunches to those in need. Lunches should be dropped off between 12pm and 2pm for distribution that day. Unfortunately, they cannot accept donations before Noon and after 2pm, due to staffing limitations.

IMPACT: Your lunches will be shared with one of the more than 30 participating organizations that HFC is working with (My Friend's Place, A Community of Friends, Bel-Air Board and Care, Village Family Services, and many, many other terrific social service organizations, whose populations are now receiving better and more consistent food deliveries because of HFC's work). With food insecurity becoming an even bigger problem, you'll directly help to provide a much-needed meal to the members of our community who so desperately need it.

DATES: Bi-weekly, every first and third Friday of the month

TIME: Drop off 12pm - 2pm

REQUIREMENTS: Sack lunches should consist of...

Turkey, chicken, ham, beef, salami or cheese sandwich with light mayo or mustard. PB&J is also welcome, but please label lunch sacks, so these aren't accidently distributed to anyone with nut allergies.

2+ side snacks such as: fruit (banana, orange or pre-washed apple), granola bar, fruit snacks, individually wrapped cheese, chips etc

No need to include a beverage, napkins or utensils (those will be provided), but please label your lunch sacks to note the type of sandwich included.

HAVE FUN packing the lunches whether you do it alone, with family or with your "COVID pod". And don't forget the sandwich bags when you shop!

PARKING: Contactless drop-off. Volunteers will be met by a rep from Hollywood Coalition and will not need to leave their cars.

Mission Statement

The mission of Hollywood Food Coalition is to feed and serve the immediate needs of the hungry every night of the year so they can build better lives. Our vision is a city where everyone has food, community, and support. For 33 years, we have served a hot, nutritious dinner every night of the year to homeless and food insecure individuals. All our food is donated, and we share thousands of pounds of excess food with partner social service organizations all across the city.

We serve upwards of 300+ people dinner every night of the year. Have done for over 30 years. No one is turned away. We get donated food, picked up by volunteer and staff drivers, and because of the Covid-19 outbreak have had to change our model from sit-down dinners indoors to handing out bags of food in "to-go," containers. We also distribute any excess food to other organizations that have no way to access donated food. We PREP the food (main course, (vegan and non) green salads, fruit salads, desserts, soups, drinks, and extra "later on" food...most of our guests are homeless). Then we SERVE the food. WE NEED VOLUNTEERS TO PREP THE FOOD AND SERVE THE FOOD. We provide masks, gloves (changed often), disposable aprons, a brief orientation when you arrive. We sanitize our environment every hour. We are wholly aware for the need of work-place safety so if any volunteer doesn't feel well, we ask them to stay home and come back when they are 100%. We are the only nightly dinner freely served in Hollywood and our guest counts have surged due to the the shutdown of many food stores, restaurants and bars and farmer's markets. WE NEED VOLUNTEERS TO HELP US. We only need 6 to 10 per shift.
