The Blue Ridge Humane Society Thrift Store raises vital funds to improve the quality of life for animals in Henderson County. This important position of Thrift Store Clothing Sorter/Steamer helps with efficiently moving donated items onto the sales floor to be sold. The funds raised at our Thrift Store go directly to supporting the animals in our community!

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • All incoming clothing donations must first be thoroughly checked for the following defects which determine if they will be sellable or not.
    • Smells detectable on clothing such as smoke, moth balls, a musty or damp odor.
    • Rips, tares, pilling and pulls
    • Under arm staining
    • Stains of any kind regardless of size
    • Malfunctioning zippers and missing buttons
  • Once clothes with any defect have been appropriately discarded, the sorter must then separate "Regular" vs. "Boutique" clothing
    • Regular Clothing (Non-Designer or High-end clothing)
    • Boutique Clothing (Designer and/or High-end clothing)
  • Both Clothing lines must be hung on the appropriate hangers with 1-2 buttons on shirts/blouses and coats to be "buttoned" prior to placing in appropriate location for tagging and/or pricing.
  • Both Clothing lines must also be hung on the appropriate hangers with all pants, zippered pullovers, and zippered jackets "zipped" prior to placing in appropriate location for tagging and/or pricing.
  • Required steaming of wrinkled Boutique labeled clothing
  • Comply with all up-to-date COVID-19 policies and procedures.

To perform this volunteer position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty in a satisfactory manner. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   • Must be able to stand while sorting clothes and steaming clothes
  • Must have minimal knowledge of men and women’s clothing labels
  • Must have completed general orientation or Virtual Volunteer Information Session.
  • Ability to function as part of a team and work with fellow volunteers, BRHS staff, and partner staff.

There are so many pieces that go into fulfilling our mission from adoption, prevention, and education and we need volunteers throughout every step of the way!
