Become a virtual Pre-GED or GED tutor! Schedules are flexible and training is provided.

GLA works in-person with adults ages 17 and older who wish to upgrade their education skills. Our program serves a wide range of education levels, from basic reading and math skills to high school equivalency (HSE) test preparation. GLA also helps adults who are returning to school and need preparation for the COMPASS test to enter community college.

Adult Education
All students take a pretest upon registration and are placed in level-appropriate small group classes or assigned to a one-on-one tutor. Program Managers monitor student progress throughout the course of study and ask students to take a follow-up test after 40 hours in the program. At that time, the Program Manager can make adjustments in the student’s study plan, promote the student to the next level, and/or recommend the student to take a practice test for a high school equivalency (HSE) exam.

Training workshops are currently virtual and on-demand to provide tutors with instruction on various teaching techniques. Opportunities for tutoring include either one-on-one or small group. Topics include reading, spelling, math, writing, basic computer skills, and pre-GED preparation (including science and social studies).

Interested?

Please email the Director of Programs, Elizabeth Roser. (roser@greenvilleliteracy.org). She will contact you to discuss opportunities and to learn more about the program. You will also have an opportunity to observe a small group, meet some of the students, and see if tutoring is right for you.

Greenville Literacy Association (GLA) makes every reasonable effort to provide a safe learning environment for students working with volunteers. Therefore, GLA requires that prospective volunteer tutors submit to a criminal background check (not credit) at their own expense. The approval of your application is conditioned on the results of the background check.

Once mutual interest has been established, the GLA Program Manager will provide a link to the online background check portal hosted by Sterling Volunteers. The prospective volunteer tutor will receive a link to the Sterling Volunteers site to complete the background check; we do not collect this information. The cost is $17.00 and will be paid by the prospective volunteer tutor with a credit card.

Mission Statement

Greenville Literacy Association’s mission is to enrich our community by increasing the literacy and employability of our citizens.

Description

GLA was founded more than fifty years ago when a group of community leaders realized that there had to be solutions to the problem of adult under-education. Today the Association is one of the largest community-based literacy programs in South Carolina and one of the most highly developed in the nation. Hundreds of trained volunteer tutors and small group instructors are active in the agency's programs, literally changing lives in a very positive way. GLA serves the community through two earning centers in Greenville and Simpsonville, and through partnerships in Greer, West Greenville and the Berea area.
