There has never been a better time to get involved and give back to those in most need in your community. At Downtown Streets Team, we are committed to assisting those that are experiencing homelessness in our community, with the ultimate goal of transitioning those in need into employment and stable housing. We currently have a few opportunities that necessitate volunteer support.

  1. We are looking for support in creating hygiene kits for our Team Members. With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic raging across the United States, one of the groups most vulnerable to contracting the disease are those who are experiencing homelessness. Every day, our team conducts outreach to those who are living on the streets and distributes hygiene kits, which include such necessities as toothpaste, deodorant, and shampoo, as well as items that are now more important than ever: hand sanitizer, masks, and sanitizing wipes. The hygiene kits you donate may be truly life-saving for someone living on the street without regular access to these necessities.

You may choose to simply donate materials for hygiene kits yourself, or you can host a donation drive through your office, church, youth group, or other community that you are a part of.

  1. We are looking for volunteer support on our weekly shifts. Every week, our Team Members clean up local communities to ensure they remain pristine and beautiful. We would love to have some volunteers who are willing to join us on those shifts. Social distancing and masks are required.

  1. Finally, on December 9th, we are having our annual holiday celebration. While the pandemic has put on hold our traditional celebration, we are hosting a celebration outside to honor our Team Members and thank them for their hard work throughout the year. We would love to have members of the community come show their gratitude for our Team members who are currently experiencing homelessness, as it would mean a great deal to them. We will be social distancing and wearing masks.

If any of these opportunities, or our mission in general, are of interest to you, please reach out! We are also open to other opportunities if you have certain skills that you believe could be useful for our Team Members. Thank you and looking forward to hearing from you!

Mission Statement

Downtown Streets Team is ending homelessness by restoring the dignity and rebuilding the lives of unhoused men and women. Dignity Above All: We are a community that becomes greater than the sum of our parts by building a social movement that's dignified, authentic and celebratory. Inclusive Collaboration: Staff, Volunteers, and Partners work on the same Team to support Team Members achieving their own success because we care about everyone finding their place at DST. Personal + Professional Grit: We stay committed to action through uncertainty; we constantly incorporate improvements and innovations; and we prioritize taking care of ourselves and each other. Whatever It Takes: We are not afraid of working whenever and wherever Team Members need us. People First: We believe in the power of our shared humanity, determination, and resilience even in the face of insurmountable adversity.

Description

Our approach is unique in that we not only challenge Team Members to take an active role in their own recovery but we also empower them to create long-term solutions for their peers. By having the opportunity to tell their stories at schools, churches, social organizations, and business associations, our Team Members are changing perceptions about homelessness in their communities.

Furthermore, our program has the inherent public benefit of a cleaner community as our Team Members engage in beautifications projects such as street cleaning and creek restoration through our Award-Winning Work-First Model. As one of our Team Members has said, what we’re doing is a "win-win-win" scenario: the Team Member wins, the environment wins and the community wins - it doesn’t get much better than that.
