ORGANIZATION: Gowanus Canal Conservancy

Volunteers will support Gowanus Canal Conservancy’s community composting efforts by operating our weekly food scrap drop-off table. Activities will include accepting food scraps, removing any non-biodegradable contaminants (fruit stickers, rubber bands, plastic), discussing Gowanus Canal Conservancy’s composting efforts with community members as well as answering related questions, and chopping scraps before they are put in the compost pile.

Gowanus Canal Conservancy advocates and cares for ecologically sustainable parks and public spaces in the Gowanus lowlands while empowering a community of stewards. We envision a Gowanus Canal and surrounding urban environment that is clean, resilient, diverse and alive.

Description

Gowanus Canal Conservancy is dedicated to facilitating the development of a resilient, vibrant, open space network centered on the Gowanus Canal through activating and empowering community stewardship of the Gowanus Watershed. Since 2006, we have served as the environmental steward for the neighborhood through leading grassroots volunteer projects; educating students on environmental issues; and working with agencies, elected officials, and the community to advocate for, build, and maintain innovative green infrastructure around the Gowanus Canal.

  • Must be at least 14
  • 10:15 am to 1:45 pm
  • The volunteer(s) must be at least 14 years old or if under 14, accompanied by a parent or guardian. A mask must be worn at all times and proper social distancing guidelines will be maintained throughout the shift.
