The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the pre-existing disparities in education, decreasing access to school and learning opportunities, particularly impactful for low-income families. START Science has pivoted from entering classrooms to online programming with remote hands-on learning to keep kids engaged and learning while protecting the health and safety of our volunteers and students. To meet the needs of our students, we are looking for individuals to join our STEM Programming team. This is an opportunity for an individual who is passionate about START Science’s mission to spark and keep aflame the excitement of elementary school children for STEM globally. The selected STEM Programming member will possess a commitment to understanding START Science’s beneficiaries and an affinity for cultivating relationships and facilitating consensus among diverse individuals. The ideal candidate will support START Science's work and provide mission-based leadership and strategic governance. Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a passion are an asset for improving the lives students and communities internationally.

Please note, this is a casual volunteer position without remuneration, except for administrative support or other costs in relation to duties.

STEM Programming Duties:
Members will serve a one-year term to be eligible for re-appointment annually
Board Meetings will be held quarterly, committee meetings will be held in coordination with full board meetings
Members are required to attend 75% of all Board Meetings
Contribute meaningfully within Board and Committee Meeting discussions as an active participant in all planning and proposals in the provision of strategic governance
Ensuring START Science’s commitment to a diverse team that reflects the communities we serve
Develop programming for the virtual STEM Ed initiative and coordinating with volunteers
Creation of marketing materials collaboratively with the Board
Coordinate with the Media & Communications Board Member to facilitate social media communications for promotion of the initiative
Maintain collaborative contact with the Chapters regarding campaigns and events

Part-time hours: 2 per week

Description

START (Students, Teachers, and Researchers Teach) Science, Inc. is a non-profit organization that aims to spark and keep aflame the excitement of elementary school children for science. Began over 10 years ago in New York, START Science has since become an international organization, with Chapters focused in Canada, the United States, and Africa, our newest Chapter having recently opened in Kampala, Uganda.

While the individual Chapters conduct the active component of the program, the Board of Directors oversees the growth and management of all Chapters internationally to ensure all are supported and furthering their impact. Board Members are responsible for the 'behind the scenes' of the organization including, but not limited to, business development, grant applications, creating and executing events and campaigns, data and feedback collection from all Chapters, financial and legal monitoring, as well as media and communications.
