Description
Welcome Table and partner Proyecto Santiago are focused on issues in the Hispanic, African-American, and minority neighborhoods in East Austin. Its outreach effort includes:
- Providing student and teacher assistance at Norman-Sims Elementary to improve student perfromance and create community around the school (includes reading with students, music for kids, mentoring, teacher appreciation events, and other projects)
- Organizing direct services for the community, including the Neighbor 2 Neighbor food pantry and community center, which s hares food, diapers, utility assistance, and caring community with our low-income neighbors in East Austin, with a special focus on our senior neighbors. In the last two years alone, we have generated 8,000+ of volunteer hours and shared over 320,000 pounds of food and more than 150,000 diapers with our neighbors.
- Discussing and presenting organizational skills to address community problems (such as coordinating and leading a presentation to the school board, city council, or appropriate agency). Leadership for such occasions is on part of, and by, community members. The emphasis is on community empowerment.
