Hack for LA

Digital Marketing Manager

hackforla.org

We are a community of highly skilled tech volunteers building a sector specific (software, tools, ecosystem) workforce development platform. We deliver social impact through the creation of Civic Tech software. We partner with community organizations and local government to address LAs most pressing regional issues. Hack for LA is a project of Code for America and is it's official Los Angeles chapter.

Overview

We are looking for a communications manager to build fundamental key media relations tools & eventually implement those tools on specific projects. With this position, our goal is to build HfLA’s relationship with the media through telling Hack for LA’s story (digital, print & social media editors) and to make information more easily accessible to the media. You will work directly with the Marketing & Communications director and project leads. Duties will include drafting both org and project based press releases and press Q&A’s, media relations strategies and other public relations efforts. The ideal candidate is someone with experience in public relations and communications from any background.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain Hack for LA’s fundamental press materials like a narrative, timeline and all of the elements of a press kit
  • Write and execute press releases, press Q&A’s and media relations strategies for both the organization and specific Hack for LA projects
  • Determine appropriate communications metrics (ROI, KPIs and OKRs)
  • Liaise with Product, Design and Opportunity Directors to increase org awareness through cohesive media relations strategies
  • Work closely with Marketing leads to develop a 360 marketing & communications plan at both the organizational and product level

Qualifications

  • Demonstrable experience in developing and executing media relations strategies
  • Strong understanding of how communications as a function work
  • You are confident and creative in writing, capable of crafting everything from executive messaging to consumer-facing newsletters, press releases, and everything in between
  • Bonus: you have a solid Los Angeles based media rolodex

Important Message

We reference formal training above. But to be clear, HackforLA is a do-ocracy, if you can do it, we don’t care how you learned. You will find yourself in the company of all types of people, from the high school wizkid and PHDs to self taught high school dropouts, who have built and sold tech companies. There is no one way to learn and we welcome your experience no matter how it was gained. HackforLA is full of people driven to make a difference through civic tech. We look forward to hearing how you will make a difference.
