Volunteers assist guests in accessing computer resources that help them in their path to independence: housing searches and online applications, computer skill development, benefits, job searches and applications, online employment orientations, and online tools that help them stay in touch with family and friends. As a volunteer, each shift is different.
Beacon Computer Lab volunteers traditionally help our guests access computer resources during the day at our Day Resource Center for people experiencing homelessness in Dane County. This involves managing the wait list and monitoring computer lab rules.
During COVID, most of our partner agencies are working remotely instead of holding office hours on site. Volunteers coordinate with staff to help guests connect with partner agencies on Zoom. Volunteers also assist by sanitizing computer stations between users and second floor gathering areas after meals.
Volunteers build people skills while sharing their knowledge of basic computer applications like Google Apps, basic job skills development such as resume-building, and basic literacy skills that help people prepare for employment and independence.
