CLEAR BLUE SEA is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization in San Diego, CA with a mission to cleanse the oceans of plastic pollution. Clear Blue Sea’s innovative marine debris removal system is an unmanned, solar-powered Floating Robot for Eliminating Debris (FRED). Three small scale FRED prototypes have been built and tested in Mission Bay and several new FRED projects are currently in work, including a FRED Do-it-Yourself (FREDDY) Instructional Package and the design of a 50-foot FRED to be implemented in Hawaii. Our FRED projects have involved over 200 students to help younger generations experience what it takes to address a global environmental crisis. Please familiarize yourself with Clear Blue Sea and our social media to gain a better understanding of our organization and our FRED solution for cleansing the oceans of plastic pollution.
Clear Blue Sea is seeking interns to work on our multiple marine robot FRED projects. Our large-scale FRED design is catamaran based, 50 feet by 25 feet, solar-powered, semi-autonomous, and performs ocean cleanup operations on a daily basis. Clear Blue Sea implements a system engineering life cycle methodology and project management practices for all student internship teams. All research and engineering analysis work will be driven by Clear Blue Sea’s approved FRED system requirements, such as:
- Guide floating debris to FRED’s debris collection capability
- Capture floating plastic from 5mm to 15 meters, floating 6-10 feet beneath the surface
- Operate autonomously and by remote control
- Alert marine animals that debris collection is occurring
- Operate at 95% reliability (MTBF) and 95% maintainability (MTTR)
- Batten down during high seas or severe weather and resist corrosion and rust
- Be powered by solar energy
- Implement sensors to gather scientific and environmental data
Desired Skills, Knowledge, and Experience
- Electronics engineering methodologies, CAD/CAE drawings, and design analysis
- Research of potential FRED electronics subsystems for comparative evaluation
- Electronics design documentation including graphics, text, and drawings
- Use of Excel to create Bills of Materials for final electronics components
- Apply knowledge of circuits and electrical components in system analysis and design
- Test and evaluation of electronics assemblies and their integration into FRED
- Develop and implement electronics assembly and integration processes and materials
Desired Education / Attributes:
- Passionate about ocean conservancy and sustainability
- Respectful and collaborative with team members and mentors
- Basic knowledge and interest in engineering and science disciplines
- Collaborative teamwork, effective problem-solving, and creative thinking
- Effective written/verbal communications, creative thinking, and continuous problem-solving
- Commitment to high quality work and accountability for assignments
