Senior Robotics Engineer Mentor/Manager - Professional Volunteer

CLEAR BLUE SEA is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization in San Diego, CA with a mission to cleanse the oceans of plastic pollution. Clear Blue Sea’s innovative marine debris removal system is an unmanned, solar-powered Floating Robot for Eliminating Debris (FRED). Three small scale FRED prototypes have been built and tested in Mission Bay and several new FRED projects are currently in work, including a FRED Do-it-Yourself (FREDDY) Instructional Package and the design of a 50-foot FRED to be implemented in Hawaii. Our FRED projects have involved over 200 students to help younger generations experience what it takes to address a global environmental crisis.

We are looking for Senior Professional Volunteers to assist student intern teams with robotics-related Systems Engineering and Integration expertise and assistance, to help our limited management team achieve Clear Blue Sea’s mission and advance our FRED solution. We have many student engineering and robotics teams, which include high school and college students, who are in need of mentoring and project review by a seasoned professional. This position offers flexible hours, an opportunity to mentor student interns, weekly collaboration with Clear Blue Sea’s Engineering Team, and being able to participate virtually from your home. Position Responsibilities:

  • Support improvements in our robotics engineering methods and tools
  • Provide mentoring and training on robotics-related tasking to student intern teams
  • Help develop robotics project plans in conjunction with interns and volunteers
  • Lead brainstorming sessions to address robot engineering opportunities and issues
  • Research robotics innovations relevant to FRED’s system architecture
  • Participate in FRED design reviews, build reviews, test plan reviews, and operational reviews
  • Attend weekly meetings with the Engineering Team, which includes all FRED Projects

Desired Qualifications / Attributes

  • Experience in robotics design and development using innovative technologies
  • Familiarity with robotics, autonomous operations, and remote sensors
  • Effective verbal and written communications
  • Patience with younger generations who have chosen to make a difference in ocean conservancy
  • Supportive of student intern tasking, ideas, and concerns related to marine robotics

Education / Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering field
  • Project management of significant robotics programs
  • Computer-aided design and engineering drawings
  • Extensive teamwork on multi-disciplinary programs
