NoSchoolViolence.org, a federal non-profit, is using big data and the data sciences to reduce school violence. It has been in place for 2 years, has won an Elastic Humanitarian award, and is being sponsored by Microsoft, Google, Alteryx, Tableau and Elastic (Elastic Stack).

22 data science volunteers are currently creating The Lantern, an app that provides parents, teachers, and schools a way of correlating observed adolescent behaviors to various types of violence associated with them. The app scans thousands of school violence documents, research papers, and clinical reports to identify behaviors that have consistently occurred in over 400 school shootings and then to connect them to 25 types of school violence. Lantern’s goal is to serve as an early warning indicator for concerned parents and teachers so that their combined concerns triggers an interaction to prevent further violence escalation.

We need a new data science director for the project because our prior director has fortunately had to move on. We need an experienced director who has managed multiple teams using machine learning and NLP (Python and BERT). Hopefully you will be able to make sure the teams have the right processes in place to achieve their goals. Additionally, experience with complex system buildings would be ideal as well technical understanding of quantitative modeling in building big data systems. And most of all, our new data science director understands how important reducing school violence is to America’s future. You will also be working closely with the founder of NoSchoolViolence.

Our groups meet weekly for two hours and individual teams work on their own. Your time commitment could be as little as two hours or as much as five hours per week attending group and team meetings.
