The Phoenix is a nonprofit organization that believes in the powerful impact of community. Our goal is to make efforts to provide accessible and FREE fitness/social programs for people in substance abuse recovery, but is also open to and accepting of the general public's support. We host daily, weekly and monthly programs and the only requirement to attend is at least 48 hours of continuous sobriety.
Our Los Angeles chapter just launched in October and we are seeking a dynamic cohort of volunteers committed to sober living to facilitate classes. Class formats include:
We are searching for a reliable and energetic volunteer or two for our Saturday morning bike rides at Crystal Springs Picnic Area! Locations may potentially across LA, so we're hoping to find someone with a relatively flexible schedule on Saturday mornings (but Crystal Springs Picnic Area will be consistent).
The ideal candidate will feel comfortable leading a group of bicyclists across all fitness levels and will serve as a great coach and also okay with bicycling 30-50 miles. If you're interested in volunteering just 3 hours of your time to help make a positive impact while getting a good workout in, we'd love to hear from you! You do NOT need to identify as someone in recovery yourself to volunteer -- we accept EVERYONE!
This is an ongoing volunteer opportunity and we are searching for volunteers who can commit at least 4-6 months (or longer).
COVID-19 NOTICE: The Phoenix is carefully observing the rates of COVID-19 cases and focusing on local regulations. We provide protective gear for our volunteers and team members (masks, sanitizer, wipes) and we enforce social distancing of at least 6-8 feet. The safety of our volunteers and team members matters to us!
08:30 AM to 11:30 AM
Shift will be Saturday mornings at 8:30AM to 11:30AM and ongoing
NONE OF THESE TIMES WORK FOR ME, BUT I CAN STILL HELP
The Phoenix offers a free sober active community to individuals who have suffered from a substance use disorder and to those who choose a sober life. Using a peer support model, we help members heal and rebuild their lives while also striving to eliminate stigma around recovery.
The ultimate impact Phoenix seeks is to help individuals not only achieve sobriety, but to thrive in recovery. The Phoenix Model is unique because of its non-clinical approach that uses the power of human connection and positive coping mechanisms through physical activity to help people heal from the underlying causes of addiction.
Phoenix peer instructors use an experiential approach that leverages innate goal-setting association with engagement in physical activities while facilitating a positive and supportive experience, allowing team members to shed the defense mechanisms that have historically kept them isolated. By bringing people together, Phoenix creates a community where people can heal, obtain essential life skills, and practice effective social interaction. Research suggests facilitating physical activity, social connection and community are potent strategies for promoting health and healing from disease.
