We are an AmeriCorps Seniors grantee and receive funds through their Foster Grandparent Program. The Kern Regional Center Foster Grandparent Program establishes person-to-person relationships between limited income adults, 55 years of age and older, to children receiving services from the Regional Center. The Foster Grandparent Program is a national program that has been active in Kern County since 1999 at Kern Regional Center. Foster Grandparent volunteers bring a lifetime of experience to children and provide an opportunity for them to more fully participate in school. Foster Grandparents serve children in schools within Kern County.

The Senior Companion Program shares the same philosophy and goals as the Foster Grandparent Program; however, they serve adults 21 years of age and older. Senior Companions serve at Adult Day Programs and Work Activity Programs within Kern County.

Volunteers receive pre-service orientation, training from the organization where they serve, supplemental insurance while on duty, and may qualify to earn a tax-free hourly stipend.

Description

Make a Difference in another person's life!

The Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion Program offers men and women, 55 years of age and older who meet the qualifications, the opportunity to serve their community by sharing their time and love with children and adults with special needs or learning disabilities. These are caring volunteers who devote 15 to 40 hours per week to helping these children and adults lead a more independent and productive life. In improving the lives of the people who they serve, the Grandparents enrich their own lives. No formal education is required. FGP/SCP volunteers receive a tax exempt stipend (does not affect rent, social security or other benefits, transportation and meal reimbursement, field trips and recognition events. We also provide orientation and monthly in-service training. Our volunteers served over 30,000 hours in 2019.
