Climbing a mountain or walking a trail for The Longest Day is a symbolic and powerful gesture to honor those
affected by Alzheimer’s. From the very first year of the event, teams have organized dozens of successful hiking events. It’s healthy, impressive, an easy sell for fundraising and creates some awesome photos! Do what you love and help us to #endalz in the process. Below are some ideas on ways you can turn hiking into a fundraiser for Alzheimer's care, support, and research. Get started today at alz.org/thelongestday or reply to this post for more information !

* Using a local mountain range or park increases public awareness of The Longest Day and can
interest media.

* Hikes allow participants to easily carry photos of people they are honoring or supporters of
The Longest Day. A selfie at the summit or trailhead with someone’s photo can be very
meaningful. Carry photos of friends and family to the summit and pause for a picture at the top.

FUNDRAISING IDEAS

SELL YOUR SHIRT
Write the name of your donor or their friend or family member affected by Alzheimer’s on your shirt. Wear that shirt on your hike so that you’re carrying everyone’s spirit with you as you go. Or, laminate a piece of paper with donor names and pin it to your back or jacket, depending on weather. For your close connections, carry a photo of their friend or family member to the summit and pause for a photo at the top.

MATCH THE HOURS/MILES/ELEVATION
Find a connection between fundraising and your climb or hike that can work to your advantage. For example, if your hike will be 13 hours, 7.2 miles and 2,500 feet, ask for donations of $13, $72 or $250. Remind your donors that they can feel free to add as many zeroes as they’d like!

SUPPORT A SUMMIT
Reach out to local businesses and ask them to support your team with a donation. If a company gives $500 or more, carry a banner with their logo and pause for a team photo at the summit or the end of the trail.

HOST A FUNDRAISER
Before your event, host a BBQ, silent auction, benefit concert, dance party or sports tournament and ask for a donation at the door. Consider holding an auction and seek gift certificates and prizes from local companies.

SOCIAL MEDIA
Use social media when raising funds and awareness. Post regularly about your event and share your fundraising progress on a weekly basis. Incorporate lots of photos and use hashtags #TheLongestDay and #ENDALZ. Drive everyone to your page to make a donation, and thank your donors publicly with special shoutouts.
