About VITA
Help hard working households save money by providing free, tax preparation services to moderate and low income Pierce County residents! The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is coordinated by a team of partnering organizations to aid thousands of tax payers each year. Support with tax preparation can make an enormous difference to an individual or family who may not know how to maximize their tax refunds and credits. Learn more:

Volunteer Roles

We are looking for remote and in-person volunteers to help with:

  • Greeting taxpayers and conducting intakes
  • Preparing taxes
  • Managing tax sites
  • Reviewing tax returns for quality assurance
  • Interpreting for non-English speakers

This is a great opportunity to gain experience in:

  • Accounting and Finance
  • Social work and human services
  • Customer service
  • Leadership

No prior experience necessary - Free training is provided!

Volunteering During COVID-19
There will be opportunities for volunteers to serve remotely or in-person at multiple tax sites throughout Pierce County. In-person volunteer service will have limited direct contact with taxpayers, and will adhere to CDC safety guidelines.

Associated Ministries is a non-profit organization located in the Hilltop neighborhood of Tacoma, WA. We are an interfaith organization uniting communities of different faiths to work together toward lasting solutions to homelessness. We provide housing services to people experiencing homelessness, as well as support to modest and low income households as a form of homeless prevention. We strive to create an anti-racist equity-driven environment for all clients, staff, and volunteers who come through our doors.

  • Orientation or Training
  • A minimum of 4 hours per week from February 1 - April 15, plus training and certification.
  • All volunteers must undergo training and certification before volunteering. For Tax Preparers and Site Coordinators, training may take several weeks depending on your experience.
