Our used book sales are a major fundraising activity for the library and provide volunteers with a great way to meet new people, reconnect with friends, and become involved in the Alameda community. See below for the various ways that you can become involved with our used book sales.

Pop Up- Genre Used Book Sales Ongoing
FAL began one day Genre booksales at the Alameda Free Library as we came out of the pandemic. They have been a great success. Held in the smaller Stafford Room these pop ups have shorter hours than our big sales and are held approx every other month. TBD

We will have openings for the following roles:

  • Book counter
  • Cashier
  • Table restock/Maintenance
  • Sale tear-down (packing unsold books, breaking down tables and empty boxes)
Books for Friends (BFF) - Ongoing
The Friends have opened a used book nook called Books for Friends (BFF) in the Main Library. BFF is open Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 12-4pm. We are looking for volunteers who can commit to working a regular schedule for 1-2 months at a time. Shifts are 2-4 hours in length and roles include customer service and store maintenance (shelf stocking, cleaning, sorting).

Book Movers - Ongoing
The Friends are moving a lot of books around all year. We are looking for volunteers with large SUVs or trucks who have two or more hours a week to dedicate to picking up donations, moving book boxes to and from storage, and helping pack up books until the annual Mega Sale at the O’Club. Please join us if you have a good vehicle and can lift a 25+lb. box.

Book Sorting - Ongoing
We are seeking volunteers to help us sort through book donations at our warehouse on Alameda Point. Two-hour book sorting shifts generally occur on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Specifically, we are seeking book sorters, book sorting shift leader(s), and a book sorting volunteer coordinator.
