Volunteer with StreetCred!
StreetCred seeks to improve the life trajectories of America’s children by helping families build assets and access evidence-based anti-poverty government programs. During the tax season, we provide free, professional tax preparation for patients with low income, their families, and the surrounding communities of hospitals, health clinics, and shelters. We are currently seeking volunteers for the 2021 tax season.
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program
The VITA program offers free tax preparation to people who generally make $56,000 or less, persons with disabilities, and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals. For more information, visit www.irs.gov/vita.
StreetCred partners with local tax coalitions to implement VITA sites in hospitals, health clinics, and homeless shelters.
Remote Volunteer Role
Volunteers are the cornerstone of StreetCred. It is only because of our committed and compassionate volunteers that we have been able to return over $5.3 million to low-income families since the 2016 tax season. This is a great opportunity to engage with the community, provide direct service in a healthcare setting, and feel great about putting cash right in the pockets of families who need it most. No prior tax knowledge is required (seriously!). We will make sure you get the training you need to competently and confidently prepare tax returns.
*This position is an unpaid, entirely remote one. Where you can help those in need from the comfort of your home!
Are you a student seeking real-life experience in exchange for academic credit? Let us know! We’ll work with you and your school to make sure you can get credit for volunteering with us!
Volunteer Responsibilities
- Complete online certification
- Sign up for weekly shifts for the 2021 tax season (mid-January through mid-April)
- Prepare tax returns for patients, their families, and the surrounding communities
- Assist with client intake and outreach (as needed)

Mission Statement
StreetCred seeks to be a national, self-sustaining, social impact organization providing tax preparation in hospitals and clinics, targeting families eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit (CTC). Through this service, StreetCred aims to: (1) Alleviate poverty while synergistically improving health care delivery. (2) Improve child health outcomes via increased financial stability, increased participation in pediatric care, and reduction of traumatic stress.
Description
StreetCred will provide free tax preparation services in conjunction with health care visits to families using the Boston Medical Center (BMC) for pediatric care during the 2015-2016 pilot year. Working in partnership with the Boston Tax Help Coalition, we are looking to recruit and train volunteer tax preparers. We plan to expand services to other hospitals, clinics, and community sites across the country in upcoming tax seasons.
