Mission Statement
Germanna Community College is currently recruiting community mentors to work with our two programs; The Gladys P. Todd Academy and Great Expectations. Our goal is to empower the students within the programs through the support of our mentors. We aim to promote academic, personal, and professional success through the relationships built at Germanna.
Description
The Gladys P. Todd Academy (GPTA) is a dual-enrollment program for underserved students who are also first-generation college students. This program seeks to assist underserved students on their way to attaining an education. This includes covering the cost of tuition, books, and tools. The GCC classes are held in the morning, and then in the afternoon the students return to their high schools. GPTA is for juniors and seniors from James Monroe High School in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and Spotsylvania High School in Spotsylvania, Virginia. While enrolled in the program, students balance both high school and college work, along with other responsibilities such as sports, extracurricular clubs, volunteering, and jobs. While participating in the program, students are required to have a mentor for the duration of the two years they are enrolled.
Great Expectations
Beginning in 2008, Great Expectations is a program for students who are either current or former foster youth and between the ages of 16 to 24. This program can be found at 21 of Virginia’s Community Colleges. Students who have been adopted after the age of 13, were in kinship care, or who were adopted at any age through a special needs adoption also qualify. By participating in this program, students receive specialized advising and guidance through their college experience. This includes assistance with financial aid, career advice, and GCC support services.
