About Us

GMin is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that inspires African youth to make change in their communities by providing safe spaces, workshops, networking and mentorship for young people between the ages of 13-20. The organization operates in Sierra Leone and Kenya, with plans to expand in the next three years. Its two pilot programs - the Innovation Lab (InLab) and the Innovation Challenge (InChallenge) - enhance critical and creative thinking, promote civic engagement, strengthen STEAM literacies and develop entrepreneurship and leadership skills in youth.

The InLab program is a low-cost, lightweight makerspace that provides youth in low-resourced schools with the opportunity to gain digital literacy, learn collaboration and creative thinking through a carefully crafted design curriculum. The InChallenge program elicits civic action projects from youth around the country and offers design workshops, seed funding, and mentorship for select student teams to develop their concepts into tangible solutions that positively affect their community.

Description

At GMin, we seek to create an ecosystem in which youth from all segments of society have opportunities to learn. We believe that learning and making are interconnected; we learn how to make and we learn through what we make. The spirit of entrepreneurship brings to life this iterative process of developing new skills while working to broaden our perception along the way.

It’s learning that is hands-on, tactile, and empowering. When activated in our youth, it has both immediate value, instilling confidence and self-esteem, and long-term effects, shaping our attitude, mindset, and behavior.
