ORGANIZATION: Teachers' Teammates

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.

Phone calls and emails to potential donors are an important way for Teachers' Teammates to spread the word about its mission and model. Teachers' Teammates would benefit from volunteers who can compile or update lists of local groups and/or contact them to let them know about us.

Teachers' Teammates relies on in-kind donations from businesses, community organizations, houses of worship and individuals. Businesses that have suitable surplus new and/or gently used goods i.e. manufacturer overruns, clearance returns and out-of-season products can donate them to Teachers' Teammates. TT will distribute them to teachers who will put them to use in their classrooms whether in person or virtually.

We have found businesses are eager to donate these type of goods. Often they would otherwise be thrown away and they can get credit for the donation to a nonprofit.

Community Groups and Organizations are interested in supporting models that reduce waste. Houses of worship are ideal organizations to collect surplus goods that educators can put to good use.

TT volunteers need to reach out to all kinds of organizations to introduce them to this model and help facilitate donations. This work can be done in-person and virtually by making phone and email contacts.

Because of COVID-19, more supplies are needed since students cannot share supplies that they usually would or they each need a set of supplies at home. Fewer groups than usual led "back to school supply drives" because they were not meeting as they normally would, such as churches. Community wide drives have focused on the pressing need of food insecurity given the economic downturn and loss of employment. School supplies are a luxury item in some communities where they never would have been before Covid-19 pandemic.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to ensure all K-12 teachers and students in Delaware County have the tools they need to succeed in the classroom. We want to demonstrate our encouragement, support and gratitude for the work of our teachers.

Description

Teachers’ Teammates is a nonprofit built by former educators and parents who recognize that teachers must reach deep into their own wallets far too often to buy basic supplies their classrooms need. Our mission is to ensure all K-12 students in Delaware County have the resources they need to thrive in their education. We do this by soliciting, collecting and distributing donated goods from businesses and the community that can be re-purposed in classrooms, and offering teachers the opportunity for free or significantly low-cost supplies.

We seek to help fill the resource gap and provide support throughout the year, with a particular focus on districts where 65 percent or more children receive free or reduced lunch.

Donations made to Teachers’ Teammates serve many purposes: They reduce waste and demonstrate good stewardship of resources while investing in our children. Teachers’ Teammates is proud to bring together many segments of our community - business, local organizations, houses of worship, elders, young people, public servants) to meet the needs of our schools. Since February 2021, we've distributed more than $600,000 in free supplies to 2,200 teachers and their students in 55 schools.
