Are you a young adult between the ages of 18-35?

Are you living with a mental health condition?

Do you want to share your story of mental illness, treatment and recovery?

Helping middle and high schoolers understand mental illness makes a big difference. We can teach them about the warning signs for themselves and their friends. NAMI Ending the Silence helps raise awareness and change perceptions around mental health conditions.

Through this free classroom presentation, students get to see the reality of living with a mental health condition. During the 50-minute presentation, a young adult living with mental illness and a family member tell their stories about mental health challenges, including what hurt and what helped.

Moving stories from positive role models have the power to change kids' views. The discussion gives students the rare opportunity to ask questions about mental health challenges to people who have lived it. The presentation’s message of empathy and hope encourages students to actively care for themselves and their friends. It also teaches them it's okay to talk about what they're feeling.

As an Ending the Silence Presenter, you will gain access to NAMI Signature Trainings that will teach you valuable skills on leading groups and discussions. Volunteering helps counteract the effects of stress, anger, and anxiety. The social contact aspect of helping and working with others can have a profound effect on your overall psychological well-being. Your valuable lived experience can help to change the lives of other family members in your community struggling with their loved one’s mental health.

This pays a $30.00 Stipend per presentation.

Mission Statement

NAMI SW WA is dedicated to helping all people affected by mental illness through education, support, and advocacy. Our service area is Clark, Cowlitz, Skamania, and Wahkiakum counties in Washington State with offices in Vancouver and Longview. Throughout our mission, we provide mental health programs and groups that are not accessible elsewhere for individuals and families affected by mental health challenges through education, support, and advocacy.

Description

NAMI SW WA is a primarily volunteer organization that provides education, support, and advocacy for individuals who live with brain disorders, other mental health diagnoses, and for the people who love and care for them. In 2016, we served over 6000 people in Southwest Washington. These services include:

  • Support groups
  • Community conversation events
  • Peer-led classes for families and individuals
  • Anti-stigma campaigns
  • Judicial advocacy
  • Monthly newsletters
  • Law enforcement crisis and provider training
  • Information resources

All programs, services, and events are offered at no-cost to participants because the population we serve often lives at or below the poverty levels. Our programs for family members are unique services and we are considered to be the representative voice for families in our community that have a loved one with a mental disorder. We currently participate in a Walk for mental illness each year and do other smaller fundraisers to support our work in the community.
