Collections Volunteers help care for and manage the collections of the McHenry County Historical Society. All collections work is done onsite at the McHenry County Historical Society Museum Campus in Union. The McHenry County Historical Society seeks a qualified and motivated Collections Volunteer to continue a comprehensive inventory of our 3-dimensional collections storage area. Under the supervision of the Exhibits Curator, the Collections Management Volunteer will assist with collections management and care.

The Collections Management Volunteer will perform the following duties:

  • Create typed inventory sheets of museum objects on storage shelves
  • Handle and relocate objects in the collection.

Qualifications:

  • Interest in local history
  • Basic computer skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Must be able to lift 25 lbs.

Time Commitment: Preferred once a week for 3-4 hours. At least a 3 month commitment. Flexible schedule. The office is open to collections volunteers from 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. on weekdays only. Staff and volunteers adhere to CDC Covid guidelines. Masks are worn at all times on the museum campus.

Training Required: Attend volunteer orientation session with Exhibits Curator.

Description

Established in 1963, our members, staff, and volunteers have a 60-year-plus record rich in preservation, education, and entertainment contributions to McHenry County.

We create learning experiences and events. We focus on local culture, organization, and family history. We collect and care for notable artifacts. We participate in the activities of like-minded organizations throughout McHenry County.

Besides operating the museum, the Society plaques historic sites and structures, holds adult programs and arranges various school and adult group tours.
