General Shelter Support (GSS) volunteers play a crucial role in caring for the basic needs of the animals residing in our shelter. This volunteer will assist the Animal Care staff with supportive tasks: sanitize animal areas/enclosures, litter pans, dog crates, bowls and toys; laundry; sweep and mop common areas; assist with trash/recycling collection; fill food, water, and litter bins; put away supply deliveries; other duties as assigned. This person should be hard-working, and ready to help our Animal Care staff to ensure that our animals are receiving the best care possible as they wait for their forever homes!
Qualifications and requirements:
Available to all volunteer levels
Attend Volunteer Orientation
Excellent organizational skills
Possess the ability to follow direction
Must be a self-starter and problem solver
Excellent time management skills
Must be comfortable and willing to assist with any supportive tasks as assigned by the animal care team
Able to lift and carry up to 40 lbs
Must be able to bend, squat, and stand for extended periods
Must be respectful toward animals and people
Must be comfortable in an environment with animals of all sizes and temperaments, loud noises, varying temperatures, comfortable handling cleaning agents, as well as being exposed to animal excrement

Animal Care League is committed to providing shelter, medical care, and comfort to animals in need; reducing animal overpopulation; and acting as a community resource, thus promoting the human/animal bond.
The Animal Care League is a limited admission shelter located in Oak Park. We help homeless cats, dogs and other small animals by providing them food, shelter, medical attention and love until we can find them a loving home. As a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization, we depend on the generosity of our communities to help us meet our goals of finding new homes for as many animals as possible each year.
